lunch: day two

Eva came home yesterday and said she wanted sushi in her lunch. Turns out that is what her friend had. I was totally surprised. Keep in mind where I live. Boy, things sure have changed since I was in elementary school.
Today's menu:
-onigiri/musubi/rice balls (while I wasn't willing to make her sushi, or go buy it, I was willing to make these. They are a staple at our house. I use brown rice and these flower molds that I found in Los Angeles)
-edamame (the last thing I expect to find on an individually wrapped package of organic soy beans is sponge bob. These are so convenient, they are already cooked so you just stick them in the fridge to thaw)
-nori (the seaweed for her rice is under the edamame)
-mango stars, kiwi, raspberries, and strawberries
-carrot crinkles and ranch
-chocolate chip macaroon (we made these yesterday. I found a recipe book by a woman after my own heart. The only white sugar in these is from the little handful of dark chocolate chips. When I run out of these I will buy the kind sweetened with evaporated cane juice)

All packaged in our new handy dandy Laptop Lunch bento box (yes, Michelle F, we are kindred spirits in more ways than we ever realized. Thanks for the reminder to pull this out and use it :)).

Did you buy the bento box online or locally? I realized when I was packing Megan's lunch this morning that I could use a better container system.

We love our Laptop Lunch Boxes! I'm probably a bit of a fanatic - I post lunch photos, too. Tomorrow's our first day of school, and I'm excited about getting back into the lunch-packing routine!

I got the Laptop Lunch Box from Kidsteals.com. They have a deal a day and the pick up location isn't too far so I don't have to pay shipping. They have a bunch of them on Amazon.com. I didn't pay full price since I got it on kidsteals. My friend, Courtney has a couple of black outside red inside sets to sell if any of you want them.

For the rice balls, here is a link. I just kind of wing it but I hate it when I ask for a recipe and people say that :). http://japanesefood.about.com/od/rice/r/riceball.htm

I got the edamame packets at Sunflower market in the frozen section. They are $2.99 for six packets. At first I thought it was expensive but then I thought about all the stupid and gross things I spend $3 on all the time and realized it was a pretty good deal. The ones without the pod are in a Dora package. I think those are easier for my kids in a hurried school lunch setting.

Why oh why has costco stopped selling edamame? anyone know? I guess I'll have to stop by sunflower....i've been having a hard time coming up with a replacement to something the kids LOVE! Thanks for the tip.

Oh to have freya eat something other than a nutella sandwich and cheese! I think I need to send her to you for food camp. I dread making lunches. If she stays in Montessori they have an amazing school lunch program with uber healthy choices. It looks so yummy. When I drop her off I want to cozy next to the first graders and have a plate.
The rice balls look fab. I adore the flower molds and the bunny in the apple slice.
