we, I mean she, made it

Every year on the first day of school we (hurry and) take a picture in front of this pine tree.
These are from three year old preschool, four year old preschool and kindergarten.
I want to reach out and hug the Eva in picture in number one and two. I loved the pink cowboy boots and I loved her short hair.

She wanted to wear the same dress she wore on the first day last year. Make it her "first day of school" dress. I talked her into wearing something new. Because, to be honest, I didn't even like the dress last year.
She has amazing neck muscles to be able to hold her head up straight with those huge flowers. Do it while we can get away with it, right? In our defense, today was "red day" and for no reason in particular, she doesn't have any red clothes. I realize that every 4th of July. So the giant red flowers made up for it.
We walked to bus stop. I took pictures the whole way. Another mom laughed at me and said, "You're funny." She thought it was funny that I was taking so many pictures. Boy, she doesn't even know the half of it.

This is the fourth year that Eva is using that pinkish purplish backpack. Makes me feel all good and reduce-reuse-recycle-ish that we have gotten so much use out of it. I could have just washed it to start the new year but instead I spent a bunch of time decorating it. I wasn't sure that I wanted to do the trendy for now bird on the branch but ended up giving in. It just looks so cute. Hopefully it doesn't prematurely shorten the use of this trusty backpack. But, seriously, no joke, doing this kind of thing is my kind of fun.

I was so nervous for this day. Nervous that we wouldn't get ready in time, nervous that we would miss the bus, nervous that we would forget something, nervous that she would freak out about her clothes (she went through a phase last year and I am still scarred from it), nervous that she was eating a gross lunch...

Turns out the day was just fine. She was fine. I was fine.

I used to be the slowest eater I knew. Along came Eva. She now takes the title. I was nervous about her eating in the lunchroom and missing recess and wondered how she was going to eat in the alloted amount of time. Images of her eating alone in the lunchroom as the bus leaves to take everyone else home...

Were you the last one in the lunchroom?
No, there were three girls, I was one of them.
Did you get to finish your lunch?
No.
What happened?
Someone came and told us to go.
A teacher?
No, she was a cooker. (I love it)
So what did you do?
I ate one more chip and went outside.

Feels weird that she is gone most of her waking hours. Feels weird to hang out with just Samuel. He said he missed her. Missed her so bad that he had to raid her room and get into her candy stash and mess up her stuff. I guess we all have different ways of showing love.

Great post. The first day of school was always bittersweet for me. I love how Samuel shows his love. I know a few other people like that!

She is so beautiful and all grown up. The picture of her and Karl is really sweet.

I love all the pictures you have of her in front of the tree. What a great idea. I would do that, but we don't stay in one place long enough for that to work. :( Her picture this year looks so much like Karl to me. She is adorable. Is Samuel going to pre-school this year?

I love the "tree pictures". You'll be SO SO glad you kept that up. Eva is beautiful. beautiful.

I totally love the backpack too and the huge flower -
MAN! I can't wait to have a girl. . .

She is be-u-tiful (and from the last posts) - very flexible as well. Congrats on surviving the first day - I knew you could do it. And thanks for the reminder of being a slow eater - when my niece started 7th grade and was talking about meeting new friends all I could think of is how I met you - mainly because I was impressed with how you always wore Guess jeans.

This was a way cute LOL (literally) post for me. The Samual thing at the end made me smile. On Matthew and Michaels first day, Mckay (the 2 year old) walked up to Matthew (because he was the first one in the door coming home) and smacked him. He then proceeded to hug both of them.

ps, My pro photog sis got this on her son's 1st day of 1st grade, "The bigger the camera, the better the mom."

She is really growing up. What a beauty! Nobody takes any pictures of me starting school each year. As I was getting my room ready, I realized that this is the 31st class I have prepared to greet and teach. My first class was first grade back in Massachusetts. Eva is a beautiful first grader. I am sure she is will love school. Her hot lunch story is funny. The teachers all agree that teachers are fast eaters. We all have to gobble down our lunch and get back to class. I always finish eating before most people I eat with. I loved this post!

I was admiring your growing photography skills on the photos. That and the birdie- I'm slightly obsessed.

As soon as I saw that backpack, I was thinking, "Where did she get that cute backpack!?" And, then of course, you made it. I have to say that you have made it really hard for me to keep the commandment not to covet ever since you posted photos of your craft room. Seriously. So. Hard. Now, I have visions of building my own craft room, in hopes that it will make me crafty (maybe I'm coveting your craftiness). Then, the other day, I thought, "Maybe I should focus on designing an awesome kitchen since I actually do cook and bake yet I've never operated a sewing machine or even been able to cut straight lines." :-)

Hooray for Eva's first day of school!

P.S. My Isaac is exactly like Samuel (few posts back) building everything just to tear it down. So funny!

I love the pictures! Especially the backpack-so cute. I am also a fan of large flowers in the hair- if only Claire would keep them in.

I LOVE the bird backpack. I know the whole bird thing is super trendy right now, but it's my favorite. :) Eva looks beautiful...
