end of the school year for eva

I remember field day from waaay back when I was in elementary school.  That, with the hot weather, the cleaning of the classroom, the end of the structured day, always let me know that it was the end of the school year.

The end of the school year started with Eva's field day, too.

This was a game where the kids tried to roll a marble and knock over a marker.

I was always grateful for her because her mom also believed that there is lunch beyond just "kid food."  So Eva would tell me the cool stuff that her friend shared from her lunch (like salads and noodle dishes) and how her friend would try Eva's edamame and nori (seaweed) and musubi (rice balls).  Nothing like two little foodies to tug on my heartstrings. 

 

And speaking of lunches, I am so happy to have a break from making lunches at 7:30 a.m..

(and I was about to crop out my foot in the left picture but then I thought that my barefoot and pajamas kind of told part of the story).

I have many containers (much to Karl's dismay) but these were my favorite this year.  The have little ice packs that snap right into the lids.  I found mine at Ross but Target always has them.  I picked up some Laptop Lunch boxes for next year and am excited to try them out (even if it is at 7:30 a.m.).

The tug of war cracked me up.  Eva was really into it.  Turns out, the girls can beat the boys.

And when the last day of school really came, Eva's friend had a fairy tea party.

I haven't seen a lot of starfruit and I thought it was so cute and perfect for a fairy tea party.

And though summer is already in full swing, it seems like this was just yesterday.  

eva, the ancient egyptian princess

Eva had been studying Ancient Egypt in school.  It was fun to hear the different facts that she remembered.  Each student was to do a project of their choice and present it.  Eva told me, "Oh, Mom, I can't make a pyramid because 20 kids are making pyramids."  We brainstormed a few different things and when I asked her if she wanted to dress up like an Egyptian princess, of course, she jumped at the idea.  

I got a bed skirt from thrift store (chose one that I liked the fabric of the skirty part) and just ripped out the white part.  I serged the edges and pinned and tied it onto Eva.

She made the collar and head band by glueing felt.

My friend had the gold trim to look like jewelry and it was perfect.  And perfectly Eva.

These were a while back...

Eva's kindergarten walked a mile for the school "fun run."  Samuel and I tagged along.  

Samuel refused to go the bathroom before we left and so, of course, 3 minutes into the "run" he is dying to go.  He kept damanding that I let him go on the grass.  Uh, we were in neighborhood.  A civilized, non ghetto neighborhood, surrounded by hundred of elementary kids.  No way.  So we cross the street and wait for the class to make the loop and catch them on the way back.  It is easier to hold it when sitting.  Punk.

 

I think the refreshments after the run were the most memorable part for the kids.  I don't what it is about kids sitting on the curb eating popsicles but I think it is so cute.  

 

They had healthy snacks available but they weren't quite as popular as the frozen high fructose corn syrup/ red 40/blue 1/yellow 5 pops.

A couple days before school ended they had field day.  And since I could.  And since Eva still wants me to, I went.  I was in charge of what was apparently the lamest activity, the bean bag toss.  With the giant parachute, potato sack race and water balloons, I didn't stand a chance.  The kids were quite vocal about the fact that they were anxious to move on to the next activities.  

But I did my duty and kept them at my station until the whistle blew.  It was hot and hearing complaints from my own kids is one thing, but 45 toothless scholars is another.  I got a little creative and I mixed things up a little.  Mostly for my benefit.  It is harder to complain when the bean bag is covering your nose or you have to throw it from between your legs.  

 

Once again, the favorite part of the day was the refreshments.  I totally get it.

  

Oh, and I took a few shots in our backyard of the kids playing after the fun run.  I love it how they play together. They weren't fighting, so that made it camera worthy.
